Hollerith patented the mechanism for the 001 card punch in 1901. Early examples punched round holes in 45 column cards. In 1928 the 80 column card was introduced, and the early machines could be updated to handle the new format whilst keeping the same model number 001. The 001 gave a significant increase in productivity over the pantograph punch. A skilled operator could punch 200 - 300 cards per hour, twice as fast as the pantograph. Round holes were replaced with rectangular holes around 1928. | |||
